Grand opening of the Rijeka Gateway Container Terminal, the largest investment project in the history of the Port of Rijeka

Rijeka, October 29, 2025 – The new Rijeka Gateway Container Terminal, the most advanced and fully automated container terminal in this part of Europe, was officially opened on the Zagreb Pier in the Port of Rijeka. This project represents one of the most significant logistics investments in the modern history of Rijeka and Croatia.

The grand opening was attended by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, Andrej Plenković, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure Oleg Butković, State Secretaries and Directors of Administrations at the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Croatia, and Members of the Croatian Parliament. The event was also attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Denmark, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, together with ambassadors and representatives of embassies in the Republic of Croatia.

The ceremony was opened by the CEO of Rijeka Gateway d.o.o. Peter Corfitsen, and introductory speeches were given by the Executive Director of the Port of Rijeka Authority Denis Vukorepa, CEO of APM Terminals Keith Svendsen, CEO of A.P. Møller–Maersk Group Vincent Clerc and ENNA Group CEO Boštijan Napast. The ceremonial speeches were also delivered by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Denmark Lars Løkke Rasmussen, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia Oleg Butković and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia Andrej Plenković.

The event was also attended by Wojciech Sopinski, Advisor to the Coordinator of the Mediterranean Corridor, Bojan Hlača, President of the Governing Council of the Port of Rijeka Authority, Robert Matić, Deputy Prefect of Primorsko-goranska County, Iva Rinčić, Mayor of the City of Rijeka, along with numerous distinguished guests and media representatives.

The Rijeka Gateway Project is the result of the largest joint investment project in the history of the Port of Rijeka between the Government of the Republic of Croatia, the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, the Port of Rijeka Authority, HŽ Infrastruktura, Croatian Roads and the concessionaire Rijeka Gateway, a joint venture between APM Terminals and ENNA Group from the Netherlands (a member of the Maersk Group) and the Croatian company ENNA Logic d.o.o.

The total investment value in the terminal and supporting infrastructure is around 600 million euros, of which the concessionaire Rijeka Gateway d.o.o. is investing 380 million euros in two phases. The project included investments in port and transport infrastructure, construction of the coast, roads, railway interface and the introduction of the most technologically advanced terminal equipment in this part of Europe.

Upon completion of the first phase, the terminal will have a 400-meter-long quay and a capacity of 650,000 TEUs per year, while in the second phase, an additional 280 meters of operational quay will be built, when the terminal’s capacity will be increased to one million TEUs per year.

Today’s grand opening of the Rijeka Gateway container terminal was also marked by the arrival of the container ship “Alva Maersk”. This is the largest container ship in the Port of Rijeka to date, capable of transporting 16,592 TEUs (equivalent to a twenty-foot container), and it is also one of the relatively rare ships of its type equipped with engines that can use two types of fuel for propulsion – methanol and traditional marine fuels, which achieves significantly lower emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases during the ship’s operation.

The grand opening of the terminal marks the beginning of a new phase in the ever-growing development of the Rijeka port system and Croatian logistics, positioning Rijeka as a key entry point on traffic routes to Central and Western Europe.
