Delivery of a third additional floating pontoon in the passenger port
On September 1, 2023, a new floating pontoon designated LUR-5 was installed in the passenger port. This is the third floating pontoon placed along the Rijeka breakwater, enabling a safe way of mooring and accommodating cruise ships up to 295 meters in length and with a draft of up to 9 meters. These floating pontoons are also used in the commercial part of the port for mooring merchant vessels with a greater draft.
The project for the construction of the third floating pontoon was contracted by the Port of Rijeka Authority with the shipyard Dalmont d.o.o. in June 2023, in the total amount of EUR 249,687.50 (including VAT).
It should be recalled that the first two floating pontoons, measuring 6 m x 9 m x 0.5 m x 2 m, were installed for the first time along the Rijeka breakwater at berths no. 32/33 in October 2019. This investment by the Port of Rijeka Authority, in the total amount of HRK 1,944,092.75 (including VAT), marked a turning point in the development of Rijeka as a cruise destination and an important step in efforts to retain existing cruise operators who had already included the Port of Rijeka in their itineraries, as well as to attract new operators yet to call at the port. Until 2019, cruise ships with a draft greater than 7 meters were moored at the Brajdica container terminal or remained at anchorage, transferring passengers to shore by tender boats.
