Visit of the European coordinators for the Baltic Sea – the Adriatic Sea and European Maritime Space
The European coordinator for the Baltic Sea – the Adriatic Sea, Anne Elisabet Jensen, and the European coordinator for the European Maritime Space, Gesine Meissner, visited the Port of Rijeka Authority today accompanied by their colleagues.
During the visit, a meeting was held to present the Port of Rijeka Authority’s development plans, investment projects, and opportunities for the further development of the Port of Rijeka within the European transport network.
Denis Vukorepa, Executive Director of the Port of Rijeka Authority, highlighted the importance of European funds for port infrastructure development, reflecting on the recent investment cycle aimed at the Port of Rijeka and the Rijeka transport route, during which significant resources from European programs were successfully utilized. Special attention was paid to future development projects designed to further increase the capacity and competitiveness of the Port of Rijeka. These include the preparation of documentation and the conceptual design for a new container terminal on the island of Krk, as well as the multimodal terminal project at the Prague Pier.
Rijeka is currently included in three major European transport corridors; notably, the Baltic-Adriatic Corridor connects key transport routes in Northern and Central Europe with Adriatic ports—including Rijeka—including rail, road, maritime, and multimodal transport. The European Coordinator for this corridor plays a pivotal role in harmonizing corridor development, coordinating Member States, and guiding investments and the implementation of strategic transport projects whereas the Coordinator for the European Maritime Space contributes to the development of efficient and sustainable maritime connections and the better integration of seaports with rail, road, and other modes of transport.
Following a meeting at the Port of Rijeka Authority, European coordinators toured the Rijeka Gateway container terminal at the Zagreb Pier and the Adriatic Gate Container Terminal at Brajdica, where they were briefed on the operational capacities and key investments in terminal development and modernization.
