Two new Super Post Panamax cranes at the AGCT container terminal

    December 11, 2025

On December 11, 2025, two new Super Post Panamax cranes from the most modern generation of port equipment intended for handling the largest container ships sailing into the Mediterranean and the Adriatic were officially presented at the Adriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT).
The new equipment is part of a large investment cycle worth 35 million euros being implemented by the concessionaire of the Port of Rijeka Authority, company Jadranska vrata d.d./ Adriatic Gate Container Terminal – AGCT. The investment aims to increase the terminal’s capacity to 600,000 TEUs per year, while increasing productivity by as much as 50%, ensuring faster, more efficient and more environmentally friendly cargo handling. This will enable increased capacity, faster and more efficient cargo handling, and full readiness for the largest container ships in the Mediterranean and Adriatic.
The new cranes were manufactured by the renowned company ZPMC (Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co.) as the first prototypes of a new generation of container bridges. They were presented by AGCT CEO Emmanuel Papagiannakis, emphasizing that this equipment represents a major technological breakthrough and a key prerequisite for accepting the largest ships entering the Adriatic. Papagiannakis also announced the imminent arrival of new hybrid RTG cranes that will further increase operational efficiency.
The official ceremony was attended by numerous partners and representatives of local and state institutions. On behalf of the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, the event was attended by Nina Perko, Director of the Maritime Administration who pointed out that the 2011 contract with ICTSI marked a historic step forward as the first private partnership in the Croatian port sector, and that the investments made so far already exceed the obligations assumed in the concession contract. The Executive Director of the Port of Rijeka Authority, Denis Vukorepa, also addressed the attendees, pointing out that it is rare for a European port to boast the installation of as many as six super-post-panamax cranes in such a short time, as the two Rijeka container terminals AGCT and Rijeka Gateway now have. He recalled that the development of the terminal began with the strategic partnership between the Port of Rijeka and ICTSI in 2011.
AGCT expects a turnover of around 420,000 TEU this year, which confirms the stable growth and the increasingly strong position of the Rijeka traffic route as an entrance to the markets of Central and Southeastern Europe.
